How Obama Won The USA

Responding to Social Media Attacks

This is a question I usually got from client when I suggest going into social media. My first answer is that some brands will be more prone to attacks than others and we have to look at these brand's social media pages to learn how to respond to them. I mentioned that local telco pages are best to look at since they are constantly under attack because of disgruntled consumers.

Here's a good article from www.openforum.com on how to handle social media attacks. Click here to view the article.

Facebook Makes It's Pitch for Places

I don't know if we realize it now but social media is changing our lives. After reading the tweets from the recently concluded Internet Marketing and Mobile Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) Summit the change of topics from 2009 to this year was totally different. If I remember correctly social media was just a mention then but now it seemed to be the single biggest topic. Being part of the changing dynamic I don't think we are conscious of how we have embraced it and how it has drastically changed our lives and lifestyles.

From how we use our mobile phones to how we access the internet - these have changed in a few short months. And, they still push this medium further. With the success of location based social networks such as FourSquare, Facebook is still pushing to change the way we live in this new and connected world.

With their huge advantage of 500Million users they push possibilities. And, they have the luxury of having other companies launch business models which they can easily adapt on the Facebook platform. This location based service may impact on FourSquare and other location based social networks.

When TV used to be my primary source of information and entertainment it is now the internet. 90% of my time now I think I spent on the net and I just became aware of this now. When the question was how will it look 5 years from now...it's how will it look 2 months from now. Change is happening much faster.

5 Trends Affecting How We Connect Through Social Media

No matter how much we open up on the web, creating new connections online can be intimidating. Just as not everyone can start a conversation with a stranger at the bar, not everyone can comfortably start conversations in social media. Luckily, there are hundreds of online services and apps popping up, trying to solve our social awkwardness and help us discover new connections in new ways. These tools allow even the introverts among us to communicate, find friends, business partners and, yes, dates.

On Happiness, Entrepreneurship and Simplicity

I started this blog sometime at the very end of 2008 not really knowing what to do with it. This was just really for me to practice my craft which is online marketing. I started actively posting around September 2009 just random posting about events I go to or my travels. Then I shifted to placing stuff about online marketing. I placed a lot of stuff I read from different sources and I wanted this to be a place where I could point my clients to and serve as a reference for me.

I guess at this point there's going to be another shift. It's not going to be that big though but I'm starting to add posts about entrepreneurship and personal growth and happiness. These are all somewhat related to each other anyway and since this is exactly what I'm going through it might be worthwhile to blog about it. This will still be a repository of articles videos on the online marketing but I will (as I have already started) post more stuff on entrepreneurship, pursuing your dreams and living a happy life.

My dream is to be a resource speaker of all the above topics. So please do wish me luck. A book about my journey is also in the bucket list, which I have to write down. Anyway, here are links to articles which I have found to be both interesting and inspiring. Please do take your time to read through it.

1. But Will It Make You Happy - about people living simply and being happy
2. Manual for Climbing Mountains - go for your dream by Paolo Coelho
3. 21 Simplicity Tips from the World's Most Popular Bloggers
4. Life is 10% How You Make It and 90% How You Take It - on entrepreneurship
5. 15 Excellent Corporate Blogs To Learn From - on online marketing

The links above would give you a good picture of what to expect from my blog from now on and if I could just inspire one person to achieve and be happier - then I too would be a happy man.

Children are Indeed the Future

7 reasons your competitors are spending $1bn on Facebook ads this year

Here's a summary below. But if you'd like to go directly to the article click here.

1. It's precisely targeted - you can target you ads by gender, age, interests, location (country at least) and if they post these details - interests, education, etc.
2. You can reach consumers directly - 500 million users of Facebook with 50% logging in everyday why wouldn't you want to be there. In the Philippines there are 12.2M users and we are now the 7th most populous nation on Facebook (we are 6th on Twitter). The strategy is expanding your presence on the net and FB is one very effective way to talk to consumers.
3. You can reach out to other businesses - if you can reach out to consumers you can reach out to businesses as well. There are already some case studies on success stories of businesses on FB. Click here for one of my blogs about it.
4. Encourage brand recognition - because you can use images and photos you can enhance and build brand equity on the fan page
5. Tweak, test and analyze -just like any other page on the web FB gives you an insights page to show you statistics on your fan page. This give you a chance to constantly see the results of your efforts.
6. Keep an eye on your budget - again this is the strength of online marketing, it's flexible. You can easily adjust the ad spend depending on you budget
7. Facebook is where the traffic is - mentioned this already and they have beaten Google as the number 1 most visited page on the net.

HOW TO: Avoid a Social Media Disaster

Here's some good tips on maintaining a good image in the social media platform. This is really dependent on which industry you are in since some industries need more damage control compared to others. If you provide a service (especially technology) then I suggest you really need to plan things out. When I handled Ayala Malls, one of the biggest malls in the country, I told them not to be scared of social media since I didn't expect there to be too many complaints or negative stuff that will be posted. Ayala is one of the most reputable companies here in the Philippines anyway.

One of the suggestions in the article I'll be linking is to learn from great examples. I think it's easy to find case studies on the internet but it's also good to observe what other companies are doing. You can look at your competitors and other companies who are considered first movers to the social media space. I always suggest to observe the following corporations and see how they handle their social media accounts:

1. Smart
2. Globe
3. Sun

You'll learn a great deal on how they handle complaints.

4. Starbucks Philippines
5. San Marino

They have a lot of online Facebook promos. San Marino is surprisingly active unlike their counterpart Century Tuna (I may not have visited their FB recently though).

Off course I'll have to include Ayala Malls in the mix being an account which I handled.

Anyway here's the quick list from the article on how to avoid a social media disaster:

1. Create a social media policy / A community management plan
2. Have an escalation plan
3. Plan for the worst - expect the best
4. Respond quickly, personally and directly
5. Don't play the blame game
6. Observe and learn from other companies including your competition (I added this)

Here's the link to the complete article.

Quote of the Day: How the Wealthy Got That Way

"Generally speaking creating enormous fortunes is a simply a side effect of what people really want to do, which is create enormous organizations. Most of these [wealthy] individuals had a vision about the way some activity ought to be done. In order, to make that vision a reality they created an organization to do it."

Today is the day, right now is the time!

If you're not inspired to do something why do it at all? As mentioned in all the talks I've posted, you have to be passionate about what you do. I think the problem is people don't really listen. "The Secret" is a secret not because people don't know about it's but because they don't listen or they don't believe in it.

I'm not exactly in the best situation right now but I believe that I AM in the BEST situation right NOW. It's just a simple mindset. Here's a short inspiring video on having the proper mindset an living a full life despite having seemingly less. I've posted this twice on my Facebook but I feel the need to post it constantly because people have the tendency to forget that everything is in their hands...

Here's 2 articles from Mashable.com which can help in you online strategy

1. 6 Online Tools for Expanding Your Video Strategy
2. Top 20 Sites to Improve Your Twitter Experience

Advertisers should really start utilizing web videos as a strategy whether just placing their commercials on the web or actually creating materials for the web. Nestle has actually started doing this by implementing youtube campaigns. You don't need to pay to place on the web and videos are a really good selling tool. One of the most successful online video campaign was implemented by 'Will it blend?'. Internet was the only medium they utilized and they generated a huge amount of sales from this campaign.

Utilizing Twitter is still a little tricky for me. Since it easy to set-up and link to Facebook it usually a standard when implementing a social networking campaign. The real hard part is actually using your Twitter as a marketing tool to push sales. It's not that easy to build a following on Twitter - this is why that article above would be a good resource.
