Why Every Entrepreneur Should Write

I haven't fully embraced the entrepreneur title. I think it's because I haven't registered my company yet. Fortunately for me though I've gotten some projects already after almost 6 months of looking. I'll use this momentum to start and incorporate my company early next year. Maybe then I can truly call myself an entrepreneur.

I came across the piece from BusinessInsider.com on 'Why Every Entrepreneur Should Write' and I said to myself; 'I write!!! Cool!! I'm an entrepreneur!!! But I do take inspiration from entrepreneurs blogs since, as the article says, you really do go through the same process. It may be a different industry or country they are writing from but I guess there is really a natural path that starting businesses must go through. Their blogs offer a lot of sound advice for start-ups and its absolutely free.

I always say that it's difficult to argue against success and these entrepreneurs have already gone through the process (some go through it several times) and they have been successful at what they do. The least I can do is listen to what they say.

In the next few months I will be formally starting my business and I'll try as much as possible to blog about my journey to share it with everyone.

50 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Business

I found this article at Under30CEO.com. Obviously it gives you questions to answer so you get a better idea of how to start your business. What I find lacking though is the question "What do you want to do?". When I tell people that I started a business they always tell me that they also want to be an entrepreneur but they don't know what business to start.

I was just lucky I guess when I decided on what business I would start. Circumstances simply dictated that I start my own. It's just basically doing my old day job as a Business Development guy for an online advertising firm and doing it on my own. Since the online marketing industry is new in the Philippines the market is still ripe for people like me to get jobs as digital marketers or actually starting my own. I just simply cut the option of going back to corporate and went pursue my own online thing.

Since the industry is new, I really embraced it an did a lot of research online. This blog is actually a result of me embracing it and trying to learn more about the industry and putting all the stuff I learn about it here on this blog to share it as well.

People tell me how lucky I am that I know what type of business to start and i don't know how to answer their question on what they should start. The standard answer would be is what is your passion? What do you like doing? - But, if I ask myself the same questions I actually don't have the answers as well. My business is simply an opportunity that I jumped into.

For people who would have to support a family making the decision to start a business is much more difficult because of the risks involved. They really must think it out. This is why I tell my younger friends to start as early as they can because you won't have the same circumstances again where there is less to lose.

If then asked the question on what I should start. I think this may be the best answer. Start by buying a franchise and get entrepreneurship skills. Once you are getting enough income from that franchise let go of the day job and push it a notch higher and start studying other options. But I think the key is to JUMP!! If you forever hold on the security of a corporate job you can never be an entrepreneur.

Just do it as they say....

The title of the talk was "Life lessons from an ad man",  my take out of the talk was 'value is subjective'. It's just really all a matter of perception.



I saw this link from an article entitled "The 6 Types of Social Media Presence You'll Meet in Heaven". The talk was meant to intro perception, value and persuasion to introduce how certain types of social media influence followers. It's also a good read to learn more on how to 'move' people on the net.

Here's an interesting article from the Yahoo! Advertising Blog. It's another looking forward article on what's to happen in 2011. Expect more articles and links like this as the year ends/starts. It's about location based marketing, B2B Marketing and more targeted marketing.

Twitter is worth US$3.7 billion!?

According to this article from Independent.co.uk Twitter's estimated worth is US$3.7 billion and it just got a fresh source of funding worth US$200 million. The article states that there are already about 175 million Twitter users world wide. They are almost becoming as huge as Facebook. The articles also says though that the investments made on Twitter is based on speculation that this will be huge in a few years time, monetarily at least since it is is already huge in the social media sphere. Well, obviously advertising is the means to monetize the platform and as mentioned in the article Twitter just recently launched 'Promoted' Tweets which is their form of paid advertising. At this point though I'm not really sure how to use their 'Promoted' Tweets (at least here in the Philippines) as I feel very few digital agencies really know how to effectively use the medium at the moment. But as a platform for companies that provide information (old media companies, news, magazines), Twitter for me has been very effective but for brands I still need to see how to effectively utilize it.

The growth of Twitter just like Facebook is staggering. Adding 100 million users from 2009 - 2010. This article from ReadWriteWeb.com outlines their growth. I have always mentioned that Filipinos are one of the most active users of Twitter and I can state the example of the Philippine Football Team fondly called the Azkals as an example. During their match with the Indonesians last Thursday night (Dec 16, 2010) the hashtag Azkals became the number 1 trending topic at one point. I really don't know how Twitter tracks these data but local topics have consistently ranked on Twitter (maybe I just don't notice that other countries have their share of trending topics as well).

Anyway, as social media goes, it seem Twitter and Facebook has solidified their positions. Some expert has to look at the life cycle of these social networks and try to predict what comes next. What's going to happen to MySpace, Friendster, Multiply, etc.? Is there space for new ones?

For some reason I've been getting a lot of good reads from the internet and I'm finding it hard to keep pace with it. So, I'll just keep posting links to nice reads I find on the net even if they are unrelated to each other.

1. 25 Things to do in the Philippines from Inquirer.net - I encourage people to travel and I hope I get a lot of visitors on my blog who are not from here so please go and visit this beautiful country of mine. I've done 11, 13, 23, 24 and. So, I'll have to add these 20 thing to my bucket list. Some I've actually visited as a child but I'd still like to add this to my bucket list.

2. 10 Laws of Productivity from the99percent.com - just real good principles to follow. Don't hesitate, start small, experiment, experiment experiment are just some of the good stuff...

3. 19 Entrepreneur Blogs that will change your life from www.johnpaulaguiar.com - there will be more links here and I haven't actually looked at all the blogs but I'm sure you're going to get a lot of good advice here. One day I want to write about my start-up experience and hopefully people can learn a lot from my experience. The internet can really change your life.

The World's Facebook Relationships Visualized (Mashable.com)


This how one person visualized Facebook relationships. Based on this most are in the US (east coast), Europe and I'll mention Asia because the Philippines is in the top 20 'Facebookers' in the world. With over 500 million user you'd think the covered most of the globe but apparently there's still room for growth.

I can't see China that clearly in the map. I think that frontier is for a local Chinese to conquer.

Here's the Twitter Trends for 2010 from the Twitter Blog. I know the Philippines is in the top 20 of Twitter users worldwide and local topics have trended from time to time but I don't know if there's a group who tracks these statistics locally. Anyway, it's still good to know these information.

5 New Online Services Perfect for Small Businesses

Here's another great article from Openforum.com. It provides a background on online services small business owners or start-ups can use to promote their wares. The services are start-ups as well and it would be good to follow these to see where all this would lead to.

Seeing this just made me realize that the internet and social media is really creating opportunities for people who know how to embrace it. You don't need to be a developer to seize it but I think they have most to gain. The internet is really enveloping our lives and now is the best time to make the most out of it.

Interesting Reads I Found Today

When I find something interesting I usually don't close the web page until I've posted it here on my blog. I try to have a theme or write an intro on the post. But these articles have been piling-up and I'd like to close some tabs on my browser (yes, I'm OC like that).

1. 3 things most people don't understand about viral marketing from Smartblogs.com - I still don't think that any local agency has really shown full competence of implementing a viral campaign (at least I haven't seen any digital only execution). Maybe some campaigns have been successful targeting a very niche market but something moving from web to the main stream have been very few. Or maybe, I'm just not the target market.

2. 5 Lessons Big Corporations Can Learn from Start-ups from Mashable.com - well start-ups can also learn from this article. I think it's a real good read.

3. 6 Social Media Trends for 2011 from Harvard Business Review - It's that time of year again where people would look at the past and the future. This article is a little too complicated for me but it's worth the read.

How to Become Legendary - 23 Things Michael Jordan Taught Me About Entrepreneurship - this is a great article for every entrepreneur. Since I am going through the process of setting up my business I really find this very relevant. Things don't happen overnight and I think you really have to be patient as the article says "Patience is more important than courage". It took me six months to close a project and it's not that big but its a start. My philosophy at the moment is take what you can and a 1% chance is still better than zero. I have time so I'll go for everything that has potential to make me money!

You gotta listen to what you read and do it! Read this.

Quotes

I like to read quotes and I try to save the best quotes in another blog and I constantly look back at it to motivate me. Since I found a good link with great quotes I felt this would be a good topic for a blog post.

Yesterday the Philippine Men's Football team won against Vietnam who was the reigning champions for that tournament. The coach had said something quote worthy (or maybe it was a quote from somewhere

Simply put you just have to keep plugging away. I've been trying to close projects for the past 6 months and it seems that everything happens at the same time. I got 2 downpayment this week and there are 2 big opportunities which I pray will go to me early next year. Sometimes I just go to meeting not knowing where it would go or what it will lead to just hoping that something will come out of it. Fortunately, they are starting to pan out.

Creative Entrepreneur

This term is new to me and I saw the term from this picture:


I've been following her for sometime now because she seemed to have embraced the web and created a lot of opportunities for herself. I think she is just one year off of college and she been making her rounds both online and offline (traditional media).

Here's just a list of her web touch points and the number of followers or fans she has:

1. Facebook 29,483 fans
2. Twitter 11,100+ followers
3. Tumbler 24,160 followers
4. Lookbook 8,462 fans

Based on these she has more presence on the internet compared to some local brands.

I try to follow because she has embraced the medium and I can learn a few pointers from her. I can recommend her to some clients to be an online brand ambassador. This also gives me a good look into what is current among the younger generation (not that I am an old fart already).

I'll try to profile more people who I think have stamped themselves on the web and who made a good living out of it.

A Net of Opportunities

I came across this article about Ian del Carmen on Inquirer.net and it simply says "A Millionnaire at 28 Thru E-commerce". It looks so simple and he just started his business on 2006. He wasn't tech savvy in any way but he decided to read about the internet and decide what he wanted to pursue.

As I always mention to people all the resources you will need for anything is on the internet. His story only proves me right. He made an effort to go online read about opportunities. He focused on what he wanted and boom there's a new entrepreneur for you. The speed on how to close those opportunities will differ based on what you want to focus on but the opportunity is there.

Filipinos know how to maximize these opportunities on the net. A great example is how we transformed the once popular social network Multiply.com to a virtual micro-entrepreneur e-commerce site. Everybody who had anything to sell was selling it on their Multiply page. I know for a fact that some of those people made it big and now own thriving businesses.

How can you earn money from the internet:
1. E-commerce - apparently you can sell anything on the net. Think Ebay.ph, Sulit.com, Ayosdito.com, etc.
2. Blog - this take a little more time and effort but if you are good you get a lot of freebies and maybe you an start a new business from here. Think Yugatech, Ourawesomeplanet.com, Flaircandy.
3. ODESK - there are a lot of sites where you can get freelance work and ODesk is just one of them. You simply need to be able to sell your skills online.
4. Check out Airbnb.com - sell accommodations to your place (this might not be for everyone though)

Well, I am just saying that opportunities abound on the net and maybe if we could teach Filipinos to look for these we can build this country to move forward.

5 Young Entrepreneurs to Watch

I posted this link on my previous blog post but at that time I was just able to watch the first video. I just watched the last video and I really suggest that budding entrepreneurs or people who plan to start a business watch the last talk.

Setting up a business is really a difficult journey and success more often than not will NOT come instantly. I am going the through process now and the frustration level at certain points really get to you. You will meet people who will excite you and show you opportunities but they will never follow through. You will have potential clients who are slow to reply and then you start to question if the project will ever push through (even though you started some work with them already). The the talk of one of the founders of Airbnb really shows the difficult process of building  business and I see a lot of similarities to my own journey. The difference though is that they are over the hump and I'm still figuring out how go over that hump.

The good thing though is that there are big opportunities right in front of me at the moment and if I just get one of 2 I'll be really happy. I'm co-pitching as the digital arm for an agency next week and I'll probably bid for a web project for a local airline next year. I'll just have to tell myself that the successful one just waited a little longer when others started to quit.
